Can Government Deliver a Risk-Free Utopia?

The View from the Middle

Three years ago, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez said, and I am quoting here, “The world is going to end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change (now).”  I’m sure she is using that exact same quote today, but I’m going to help Ms. AOC with some fundamental math facts, because I know she’s not particularly strong academically in that area (or any other that I am aware of).  Twelve minus three is nine.  The clock is ticking, and I plan to be here in nine years to call her a liar, a fearmonger and a complete idiot.  And I don’t say that with any misogynistic venom.  I believe women can say and do stupid things just as often as men can and AOC is simply proving my point.

AOC also demonstrates a new political technique that I am calling “The Convenient Argument”.  A Convenient Argument is one that cannot be proven wrong or right and allows politicians to take credit or place blame no matter what actually happens.  I am a climate change agnostic as was the late, great Charles Krauthammer.  Is the world’s climate getting warmer?  Possibly, however given how the scientists gather that information, I actually don’t know, and I’m fairly certain that none of you do either.  Has the earth been through this kind of warming before when man’s activities could not possibly have been a contributing factor?  Absolutely, and there is plenty of scientific evidence to prove that.

Have 100% of Al Gore’s predictions been proven wrong?  Yes.  Has 99% of climate panic drivers’ (scientists) predictions been proven wrong? Again, absolutely.  The polar bears are still here and so are the polar ice caps.  New York City is not under water nor are the Maldives (islands who are and have been only six feet above sea level).  The fact is, we should all be very skeptical of the Henny Penny, “the sky is falling” doomsdayers who are trying to take away our money and our rights TODAY by threatening global cataclysm in the distant future.  As I have said before, anyone who tells you that they know for certain what is going to happen in 100 years (the new goalpost for climate fearmongers) is lying.  And I won’t even get into the claim that “global” warming can be corrected by the United States alone.

I’m NOT saying that we should be living irresponsible lives, trashing the environment as we prance through life.  I’m NOT saying that we shouldn’t be trying to harness renewable energy sources, particularly the sun.  But we shouldn’t be doing this in a panic, destroying entire industries and collapsing the economy of the most environmentally conscious country in the world, which is the US.  We also should not be burdening our children and grandchildren with a national debt that will crush their opportunities and severely limit their choices in the future.

Few people, if any, actually understand climate.  Even Al Gore’s chief climatologist admitted that “Climate” is so complex that it is impossible to predict.  But our politicians in Washington really don’t care about any of that.  They only care about power and their next election.  That is why climate change (or global warming, or whatever they will call it tomorrow) is such a great centerpiece for their campaigns.  If the climate cools, as it has done throughout the history of this planet, the politicians will take credit.  If it does not, they will simply blame their political enemies saying that they didn’t do enough.  No one will be able to prove any of this because it is unprovable, and I believe it’s because this is God’s plan and He has been in control all along.

The Covid-19 debate is very similar.  Few if any actually understand this virus, where it came from and how to mitigate it.  Do masks work?  Fauci said “no” before he said yes, and there is no actual data (evidence) that they do.  There is, however, evidence that they make no difference, especially in children.  Florida has done a study that compared infection rates in schools that mandated masks to schools that did not, and they found no difference.  And a study in Massachusetts found that cloth masks actually increase the likelihood of being infected.  Did shutting down the world’s economies work?  Actually, no!  Our highest infection rates and deaths have come during the world’s most stringent lockdowns and highest mask usage.

I align with the many doctors and virologists, including Dr. Dan Stock from Indiana, who believe that Dr. Fauci, the CDC and the NIH are NOT in control as they suggest.  This virus is in control.  It is doing what viruses have done since the beginning of time.  It infected everyone it could until the beginning of herd immunity challenged its existence and then it mutated in an effort to survive.  But politicians will quickly take credit for naturally occurring declines in infections and will be quick to blame naturally occurring surges on their opponents or you.  Since none of the connections between these actions and results can be proven, it is a perfect and convenient political argument.

And if you won’t march to their demands, they will try to shame you into it.  They will say that if you don’t wear a mask, etc, you want people to die, particularly children.  This is a lazy, despicable, divisive claim.  First, it suggests that infection with Covid-19 is a death sentence when we all know that 99.8% of people who contract this disease will survive.  And the survival rate is even higher for children.  While children aged 17 and under represent approximately 25% of the US population, they represent only .06% of our deaths (that's only 354 out of 610,000 total Covid deaths).  In fact, the seasonal flu is usually deadlier for children than Covid-19, but I don’t remember mask mandates in our schools for that.  The shame offensive is a shame in and of itself.  Life is full of risks.  We could bubble-wrap our kids and put them in padded rooms from birth, but even that wouldn’t guarantee this virus would not find its way into their bodies.  We need to allow people to manage life’s risks as they see fit, not as our bloated, inept, corrupt government suggests.

We need to ignore the political fearmongers.  They are no more in control of this virus than they are in control of the sun, although they will try to convince you that they are.  We need to be independent, responsible adults who can do their own risk assessments and live our lives without the heavy hand of a power-hungry government that will force its will upon us.  You certainly should wash your hands frequently and stay home from work if you have symptoms.  If you want to wear a mask, go ahead, although I personally think that most masks don’t work.  I encourage all to get the vaccine, but that is a personal decision.  If you have already had Covid-19 and recovered there is little evidence that the shots will improve your resistance.  All of this, however, is really just tinkering around the edges of this virus.  It has already proven that IT will have its way despite our best efforts, and we certainly shouldn’t be creating new ones in labs with less safety protocols than your local Subway sandwich shop.

Remember the famous despotic, autocratic, Marxist motto, “don’t let a good crisis go to waste”.  In other words, power-hungry politicians will take advantage of this and every challenge we face to take away our freedom and money with a promise of utopia, which will never come.  Resist the urge to give up your liberty at all costs.  That freedom is what has made this country the best in the world and without it we will experience a descent into poverty, chaos and strife like all of the promised utopias of the past – Russia, Cuba, China, Venezuela, and so on.

  2. "First, it suggests that infection with Covid-19 is a death sentence when we all know that 99.8% of people who contract this disease will survive."

    Is the only downside death?

"We need to allow people to manage life’s risks as they see fit."

Agreed, they should manage their own life's risks as they see fit. Tell me, do you support drunk driving laws? Why? Why can't drunks manage their lives as they see fit? Only 10,000 people per year die in drunk driving crashes? That means the vast, vast majority of people who drive drunk don't kill anyone. So should we repeal those? Why do you insist on having the government control whether you drink and drive given how few people die as a result?

But let's step back, and look at this from a more traditionally conservative perspective. After all, what differentiates conservatives from libertarians is conservatives recognize some regulation is for the benefit of society. They typically rely on a moral code for that, which is why you can't buy alcohol in Arkansas on Sunday (by the way, surely you want to repeal that, right?).

But let's say you're a Christian conservative, and recognize some duty to care for your fellow man. If I tell you that in enclosed spaces you are required to put a piece of cloth and if you do it will help reduce deaths and illness in your fellow man, would you do it? What number of deaths would it take for you to agree that a requirement that you cover your gaping maw - not that you can't speak, just keep all your slobber from coming out every time you cough or speak - and say that's reasonable?

Is it 100 deaths? 1000 deaths? 10,000 deaths? Does it matter to you that seniors are the most vulnerable? Again, all you're being asked to do is put a piece of cloth while in crowded space. No more of an imposition on you than asking you to wear pants in a public park (how many people has observing genitals ever killed?). But that's overarching reach and you've had enough?

Or are you full libertarian now? Everyone takes care of themselves, no duty to the whole? If so, I can appreciate that as a concept. But why are you stopping at masks? The government puts all kinds of restrictions on what you wear and how you act over things that don't cause any deaths, or don't affect anyone else but you. Seatbelt laws, public nudity laws, zoning laws, vaccination rules for TB, smallpox etc. in schools, school dress codes, etc. Let's get rid of them all. Who has the right to tell you to do those things?

If this is your position: "We need to allow people to manage life’s risks as they see fit, not as our bloated, inept, corrupt government suggests" then embrace it fully. If you're not, it looks like you're just hopping on the political issue de jure, ginned up by one of the parties to get you reacting emotionally, and not thinking. That's not the case, is it?

    1. Your examples are ridiculous and you need to search for more than just articles that support your position. Get out of your echo chamber.

And be honest, you have no idea if masks work, because there is no evidence and you don't know if vaccines improve your prospects if you have already had covid and survived.

I'll wait to hear from you when the government says you can't charge your clients but you still have to pay your bills. Then we will see how much like that direction. It will be too late.

And you obviously intentionally skipped over this sentence in my article, " We need to be independent, responsible adults who can do their own risk assessments." Be responsible, but do not be sheep!

    2. How exactly are they ridiculous? I'm literally using YOUR logic. You mean the subject is ridiculous? It's hard to imagine something being more ridiculous than arguing over a cloth mask when you're in a crowd. Our legislatures reduce ENUMERATED rights all the time and they get 1/10 of the pushback of this. That it's even an issue given all the other governmental infringements upon us is ridiculous and evidence of the power of the outrage machine, not any principles at risk.

We do know the vaccine protects you for a longer period of time than having it and not getting vaccinated.

Are you talking about the eviction moratorium in the 3rd paragraph? Because I agree it's ridiculous at this point given the strength of the Biden economy. (A joke, I don't actually believe Biden is responsible for the economy any more than I did Trump was).

"independent, responsible adults." I like that phrase. It seems to mean something, but really could mean anything or nothing. It's a good politician phrase. Are you running? I'd probably vote for you if so.

    3. I'm glad you are coming around a little. And now you also know that the vaccine does not add any protection to those who have already survived Covid-19 (from the link I provided below).

Here is why your examples are ridiculous. Mandating masks (that don't work, even according to Fauci) is like passing a law that requires us to wear seatbelts while we are sitting on our couches in our homes. Accept the facts. Masks don't work, and cloth masks actually increase the likelihood of infection, yet Joe Biden and Democrats are using the act of resisting masks to demonize those who don't believe in them and to divide our country despite his promise to unite us. Pathetic.

Here's my question to you, Matt. Where will you draw that line. Will you just goose-step to whatever the government tells you, even if it meant financial ruin for you and your family? Is there anything that you currently disagree with that you are willing to fight for. What if the government demanded that all white people need to pay a fine just for being white and attend a government run re-education program? And don't suggest that is ridiculous. Katie Couric has already suggested that on national TV.

Our founders knew the potential depravity of man (and woman) and understood the tendency for government to usurp power and infringe on our personal freedoms. The Bill of Rights is all about "limiting" government and protecting our individual rights. Is there anything you believe the government can't tell us to do?

    4. You have one doctor that says natural immunity is equal to the vaccine. There are many, many more who disagree.

As to my examples, they use YOUR logic. You noted how few people die. I noted how few people die. Yet you find one reasonable and the other unreasonable.

Do you find school dress codes unreasonable? How does telling girls they must have their shoulders covered, for example, or skirts to the knee, protect anyone? Yet there's never been much of an objection to those rules in school. No one has cried freedom over those. So why now? Don't you ever realize that from CRT (which is not in Arkansas primary schools) to masks, you're being ginned up for a purpose?

Masks don't work is your conclusion. Most experts disagree. Most school boards in Arkansas disagree. Are you contending they're all under the spell of Joe Biden and the Democrats (scary music!)? Really? In Arkansas? Joe Biden has nothing to do with whether Arkansas schools wear masks - so why in the world would you bring him up? He's proposed no law that you wear a mask anywhere in Arkansas outside maybe federal buildings. Your desire to make everything partisan is showing.

Where will I draw the line? Lots of places. I draw the line on damage caps for juries, which take away a fundamental right enshrined in both the Constitution and Declaration. I draw the line on qualified immunity for police when they deprive you of your life and liberty. I draw the line on civil forfeiture, where you lose your property without being convicted of a crime. I draw the line on the use of eminent domain for the benefit of private entities. Actual, enumerated rights that deprive people of their lives and property.

You're going to battle over a piece of cloth. It's like going to battle over having to wear pants in a public park,.

And now you're citing Katie Couric's musings as justification for your fears? Really? Katie Couric? The afternoon talk show host Katie Couric? Please tell me you're joking. I know you're a more serious person than that.

Our founders DID know that, that's why we have the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Which talk about actual government infringements on liberty. And why I'm so surprised the GOP followers who are outraged about a piece of cloth in school have said nothing while the GOP chipped away at their actual enumerated rights. Where were the protests when the Supreme Court ruled kids had a lesser expectation of privacy (freedom) from 4th Amendment searches in schools? They didn't exist.

Tell me - have you looked at a school handbook lately? Have you seen the almost complete power it gives administrators to determine what is "appropriate" behavior and dress for kids? There's a ton of government power there with virtually no limitation on the administrator. Has been for years and yet no one has said a thing.

The fact that people, in the middle of a pandemic, are fussing about a piece of cloth over their mouths when they've been silent through so much more, tells me this is a created crisis, done for the benefit of the party, and nothing more. You're being played, stirred up for the financial and electoral benefit of a few. The GOP no longer tries to win with better policy - they don't really have any policy to promote. It's just all about outrage generation.

It's working on you. You're knee deep in outrage porn, passing it on left and right without thinking about why. You don't stop to say, ok I hate Democrats but what policies are YOU enacting, GOP. Remember that next time you get a GOP President and GOP Congress, and you don't get the deficit reduction you want, and you don't get the additional freedoms from REAL government power I mentioned above, and you don't get any of your policy priorities. That will be on you, because they know all they have to do is make you mad at the other team and you'll never ask anything of your own.

  3. Fear-mongering and shaming from leaders who are an inch deep and a mile wide is so disappointing...and I think they too are afraid of so many things. What is the opposite that we can strive for? Community, friendship, knowledge, a love of learning...I think these could breed truth and hope.

  4. This is false:

If you have already had Covid-19 and recovered there is little evidence that the shots will improve your resistance.

    Your statement is false, btw.

    3. Matt,
Below is a link to an article about one of the studies and the second link is a to the actual study or at least a scientific recap of it. Good luck reading it. I did pluck one short sentence that might summarize its findings. It said,

"individuals who recovered rapidly from symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection generated a robust humoral immune response". Hope this helps.
